I’ve enjoyed taking part in #RPGaDay again this year, posting daily on Twitter X, Mastodon, and Threads. Here’s a round up of my posts from the second half of the month.
– funniest game I’ve played. We’ve had lots of funny moments in our D&D and Cthulhu games over the years but I think Paranoia is still the funniest. Would love to play it again sometime to see how well it’s aged.

– favourite game system. This is going to come as a surprise to exactly no one, but it’s D&D 5e 😀
– favourite published adventure. Hard to choose between Horror on the Orient Express (ran) and Masks of Nyarlathotep (played). For D&D, Red Hand of Doom takes some beating.

– Ive been playing D&D and Cthulhu RPGs for over 40 years so hopefully I’ll still be playing them in 20 years 😀
– my favourite licensed RPG is Alien from Free League which is great fun to play and does an excellent job of capturing the feel of the movies. I like Blade Runner too which I’ve played but not read, and have fond memories of MERP, despite it not being a great fit rules-wise with Tolkien’s world.

– my best secondhand purchase was issue 70 of Dungeon which I got on eBay and contains the classic Kingdom of the Ghouls adventure by Wolfgang Baur. Reading it helped me visualise the Pure City of Vandekhul for Empire of the Ghouls 💀

– I’ve picked up a lot of cool RPG stuff over the years but I still think the original Planescape boxed set is the coolest. Fingers crossed for the 5e version🤞🏻

– the most complex RPG I’ve run in recent years was Starfinder. I had a great time running the Dead Suns AP but prepping for the game did involve a fair bit of homework. The simplest is probably Numenera – nice and easy to run, apart from thinking of cool GM intrusions.

– I don’t own many RPGs that I’ve NEVER played in physical format, but the one that stands out for me is the Dresden Files RPG. I loved the books and keep looking out for games at conventions but no luck so far. I’ve got dozens of unplayed RPGs from Bundles of Holding etc though 😵💫

– I loved the AD&D Permanent Character Folder & Adventure Records when I used them for my favourite cleric PC back in the day, so I treated myself to an unused copy on eBay a while ago.

– I’m really looking forward to the upcoming 5e edition of Planescape and excited Tony DiTerlizzi is on board. I’d love to see a new edition of Greyhawk, and am looking forward to seeing if the next iteration of Starfinder fixes starship combat.
– the scariest RPG I’ve played was a session of Cthulhu run by my friend Tim based on Salem’s Lot. Our PCs were trapped in a house waiting for the vampires to attack when a cat knocked over the bins outside Tim’s house. We all jumped out of our skins!
– my most memorable encounter was the climax of my Parsantium campaign in which the 20th level Juma Associates fought and defeated 11 rakshasas (including their nemesis Heinsoo) and a yakfolk sorcerer to stop them from freeing the rajah Vrishabha from the glacier he’d been frozen in for nearly 2000 years!

– not including Schemers & Scoundrels, the unpublished (?) indie game I played in Games on Demand at Dragonmeet last year, I think the most obscure RPG I’ve played is Living Steel/Phoenix Command. Anyone else remember that one? It’s super crunchy and my first PC died 5 minutes into the session 🙄

– I’ve enjoyed a lot of games over the years but Dungeons & Dragons is my favourite RPG and 5e is my favourite iteration of it to run, play, and write for. Long may it last!
