Scarlet Citadel Session 49 – The Demise of Imortra the Debased

Here’s the latest write up in which the PCs finally defeated Imortra and returned to the Black River. It’s been two years since I started running the campaign, and amazing to be closing in on our 50th session!

You can read earlier posts here. This post contains spoilers for Scarlet Citadel.

Tricksy rejoins the party and examines the door to Imortra’s chamber, realising it has an arcane lock spell on it. Maya casts dispel magic and Tricksy picks the lock. The characters open the door and Clairmont charges in to attack Imortra. However, the elven mage is not alone – she’s summoned an invisible stalker to protect her. It doesn’t make much difference, though. Cornered, Imortra falls to Clairmont’s spiritual weapon, then Tunde casts faerie fire to outline the stalker and the adventurers finish it off.

Imortra’s Chamber

The characters start to search the room, when an imp appears inside the gilded cage. Introducing himself as Natisti, he begs the party to release him so he can return to the Eleven Hells. In exchange he offers to share the location of Imortra’s secret treasure stash but is suspicious that Tricksy is going to, well, trick him and insists the rogue “pinky swears” he will let him go.

Directed by Natisti, Tricksy finds the secret compartment under Imortra’s bed and also spots the glyph of warding on it which one of the clerics dispels. Unfortunately, he doesn’t spot the second glyph on Imortra’s spellbook and triggers it when he opens it, injuring his companions and killing Natisti! He decides not to open the scroll tube he also found in the compartment for now, just in case.

During their search of the room the characters also find Imortra’s fancy outfits and jewellery, two vials of purple worm poison, and various notes and books. The mage is also wearing an amethyst brooch similar to Cagoth-Ze’s. Tunde casts lesser restoration on herself and Maya to cure their mindrot disease, then the group has a short rest. Tricksy reads Imortra’s notes which explain the operation of the skull symbol inlaid into the floor in the nearby room.

Realising they can use the skull as a teleportation circle to take Imortra’s prisoners back to Redtower, Tricksy asks them if they have any money. They shake their heads sadly. Despite their lack of funds, the characters transport the prisoners and themselves to some overgrown ruins in the forest near Yarila and Porevit’s temple. They leave the rescued captives with the alseids and return to the village for a much needed rest.

A few days later, the adventurers return to the Scarlet Citadel, again using the owlbear tunnel to enter the stables on Level 3. They find all the trollkin dead – it looks like their barricades failed after the characters dismantled them to build their raft.

Fighting the Ring Servant

As the group ponders this, the ring servant – the glowing construct the trollkin had asked them to kill last session – appears from the north. The strange creature uses its Ring of Destruction to inflict heavy wounds on the characters who scatter so they can fight back from range. After a few rounds, Maya takes it down with a guiding bolt.

The characters dismantle the rest of the barricades and build a second raft at the Shrine of Charun. They set sail on the Black River, heading in the same direction, but realise that the current is now flowing the opposite way. They give the landing where they encountered the monolith champion last session a wide berth, hugging the eastern side of the tunnel. Maya stuff her ears with wax so she can’t hear the construct’s words.

Water Leapers

Tricksy sends Professor Yaffle through a curtain of fine rain into a glowing gold chamber. He can see five golden pyramids through the owl’s eyes. Before he can follow Yaffle into the room, the characters are attacked by a pair of water leapers. Maya’s wax protects her from the water leapers’ shrieks but the weird creatures are able to grapple first Tunde and then Tricksy.

Once the monsters have been dealt with, Tricksy flies into the pyramid chamber, unable to resist its golden glow any longer….
