Here’s the write up from our 51st Scarlet Citadel session in which the PCs were surprised to find themselves indebted to a devil and built yet another raft.
You can read earlier posts here. This post contains spoilers for Scarlet Citadel.
With no sign of the dock at the Shrine of Charun, the characters reverse course and steer their raft back towards the stone landing where they’d been teleported back to Level 4 by the monolith champion.
Sure enough, they are teleported back to the skull chamber again, but there is someone waiting for them – a pig-faced chort devil armed with a flaming polearm called Vuxarix. The devil says he came here to claim payment from Imortra for services rendered but has found her dead. By the terms of the infernal contract Imortra signed, the characters are now liable for the debt and have 30 days to hand over 10,000 gp or one of their souls. He doesn’t mind which. Vuxarix hands Clairmont a copy of the contract, then vanishes in a puff of brimstone.

Once Vuxarix has gone, the adventurers return to Redtower using the teleportation circle and spend a couple of days in the village. Tricksy identifies the bear paws found in the Deep Ones’ vault, and they purchase potions of greater healing from Zula.
Their friend Konrad casts comprehend languages on Clairmont so he can read the infernal contract but it’s hard to figure out the diabolic legalese. When Clairmont casts commune to speak with one of Khors’ angels, they confirm that the contract is legit.
The party return to the Scarlet Citadel, and use the owlbear tunnel to enter via Level 3 where they build another raft from the remains of the trollkin barricades.
Heading towards the golden pyramids chamber, they are attacked by a group of lesser scrags. Once they’ve been defeated, the characters enter the room. Tricksy casts web which causes the southern door to open and a portal to form atop the pyramids.

When the elf rogue goes to investigate the treasure in the room beyond, an invisible ghostwalk spider bites him. Badly wounded, Tricksy uses his wand of ignition to set fire to the web, closing the portal, and they escape to the raft. Fortunately the spider doesn’t pursue them.
After some healing, Clairmont uses his eyedrops of see invisibility. Protected by spirit guardians and death wards, they return to the chamber and. Tricksy casts web again to reopen the door and the portal.

Maya slays the ghostwalk spider with a guiding bolt, but then a spider of Leng emerges from the portal, furious at being inconvenienced by such “lower life forms”….
