Scarlet Citadel Session 3 – Owlbear Trouble

We’ve played two sessions of my Scarlet Citadel campaign since I posted my last write up, so here’s what happened in the 3rd session. I’ll post the 4th session later this week. Hopefully they’ll prove useful to others running the adventure.

You can read earlier posts here. This post contains spoilers for Scarlet Citadel.

As Mike “SlyFlourish” Shea says, it’s always good to begin each session with a strong start, so I kicked off session 3 with an owlbear trying to tear down Tobiasz’s hut on the outskirts of Redtower. This is another location that Jason R on the Midgard Adventures Discord has done a very cool VTT map for.

Tobiasz’s Hut

The characters were able to drive off the owlbear and chat to Tobiasz who told them this wasn’t the first time that owlbears had attacked his home. The characters searched the hut to see if there was something causing these owlbear attacks but didn’t find anything obvious.

Next, they spent some time buying gear at the smithy, visiting Zula the witch to buy the one potion of healing they could afford, and having drinks with Mayor Wislaw Broz.

The next morning, they tracked the owlbear into the woods and came across a large briar tangle. After battling some giant centipedes, Allia and Cauldvyr entered the thicket and found signs that someone had been hiding out there.

In the Scarlet Citadel ruins, the party fought and killed another owlbear which vomited up a magical bezoar when it died – so far, no one has been brave enough to swallow it! They also discovered a buried entrance to the dungeons below. Lacking the proper gear, they decided to leave this until later. We ended the session as darkness fell.
