Game Design News – Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer and Castles & Crowns

I’ve got a couple of exciting bits of game design news to share this week!

Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer is a new magazine published in the UK by Hachette Partworks, designed to teach you how to play D&D. It launched yesterday and is available to buy from WH Smiths etc and on subscription.

I’ve written several adventures and articles for the magazine which will start appearing from issue 14 onwards. Will Doyle and Stacey Allen (Tomb of Annihilation, The Wild Beyond the Witchlight) have written a ton of great material for the magazine too.

It’s well worth checking out if you are new to D&D or have friends or kids who want to learn more about the game.

From October 2022 to April 2023 I was hard at work on Campaign Builder: Castles and Crowns, the latest Kickstarter from Kobold Press.

Designed for 5e and Tales of the Valiant, this is the follow up to Cities and Towns, and is a toolkit for creating fantasy kingdoms and rulers, and running campaigns focused on courtly intrigue. The book features castles, royal magic, player options, NPCs, and lots of useful tables.

I had a lot of fun working on the chapter on designing kingdoms and their rulers. You can read my Design Diary on the Kobold Press blog, and download a free preview from the Kickstarter page.

The Kickstarter ends on 5th October.
