Game Design News – Castles & Crowns and Tall Tales by Firelight

A couple of things I’ve worked on have been published recently, so thought I’d post a brief update.

I started working on Campaign Builder: Castles & Crowns in Autumn 2022 and turned over my chapter on Rulers and Kingdoms in April 2023. Now, the book is out to buy from Drivethrurpg and will soon be in game stores, and I am thrilled with how it has turned out!

Designed for 5e and Tales of the Valiant, this is the follow up to Campaign Builder: Cities & Towns, and offers a wonderful toolkit for anyone who wants to create fantasy kingdoms and rulers, or run a campaign focused on courtly intrigue. The book features castles, royal magic, player options, sample kingdoms, NPCs, new monsters, and tons of useful tables.

I had a lot of fun working on the chapter on building kingdoms and their rulers, and have been really happy to read early feedback from gamers on the Kobold Press Discord who have already used the chapter to design their own kingdoms!

You can read my Design Diary on the Kobold Press blog to learn more and can buy the PDF from Drivethrurpg now.

Tall Tales by Firelight, my ninth adventure for Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer, appeared recently in issue 38 of the magazine. Set in Gauntlgrym, this roleplaying-focused adventure includes a run-in with a classic D&D monster, the rust monster.

I’ve turned over two more adventures for the magazine already, due to appear in issues 47 & 51, and am currently working on three of the adventures that form part of the final arc of the campaign. I’ve really enjoyed working on the magazine and it’s been great to collaborate with Aviad Tal, Sarah Madsen, and the other writers on the project. I’d love to hear from anyone who has played the adventures too.

That’s all for now but I’ll have some exciting news to share about a Kobold Press project I’ve been working on soon….
