Tomb of Annihilation Session 12 – Lift Off for Yellyark

Adventurers standing overlooking a series of jungle waterfalls

Here’s the write up from our latest Tomb of Annihilation session in which the characters obtained the control amulet for Vorn, the shield guardian, and launched the goblin village of Yellyark into the jungle.

I used another encounter from Cubicle 7’s Uncharted Journeys this session, and gave my newly painted grung minis a run out!

8th Marpenoth, 1495 DR (contd.)

Eysleigh casts pass without trace on the party, and the characters advance cautiously towards the goblin village of Yellyark, home of the Biting Ants tribe. Rhamash and Tharhul lead the way, spotting a tripwire designed to trigger an alarm, and step over it. Unfortunately, they fail to detect a camouflaged goblin sentry who raises the alarm anyway.

As the goblin dashes towards the village, Rhamash jumps on top of him and pins him to the ground. Eysleigh tries to persuade the grappled sentry (who is one of the goblins they’d encountered in the jungle previously) that the party have a valuable jug to give to Queen Grabstab.

Meanwhile, more goblins emerge from the village and open fire on the characters. Certes casts sleep, knocking out four of them, while the fifth runs to the queen’s tent, screaming that the village is under attack.

Rhamash ties up his captive, then sprints into the village along with Tharhul and Eysleigh. Certes brings up the rear. Queen Grabstab emerges from her tent to see what the commotion is, accompanied by her sidekick Yokka, the goblin boss that the characters defeated outside the House of Man and Crocodile

Tharhul demonstrates the powers of the alchemy jug, using it to produce mayonnaise, vinegar, and beer which impresses the goblins. After Rhamash and Certes chip in to support Tharhul’s argument, the queen agrees to swap the jug for Vorn’s control amulet.

As the party leave, watched by the goblins, they quickly talk to Frambert Drumwillow, the exhausted Emerald Enclave scout who is being held in a bamboo cage. He begs the characters to rescue him, before he is covered in honey and fed to the giant ants. Frambert explains that Yellyark is built on top of a net of vines and branches so the village can be flung to safety when it comes under attack by predators.

That night, the Queen and the other goblins get drunk on beer and wine from their new magical jug. The characters sneak back into the village and find the launch mechanism. Certes slashes the rope with Windharrow and Tharhul cuts the final strand with his knife. The village is rolled up into a ball, and flung through the air, landing with a crash a mile away. The characters break open Frambert’s cage and escape with him into the night.

10th Marpenoth

As the party travel back through the jungle to Vorn’s location, they are attacked by a trio of hungry allosauruses. Certes levitates out of harm’s way, but poor Tyke is killed and must be brought back to life by Tharhul.

As the end of the day as the characters search for a suitable campsite, they reach a watering hole where many hadrosauruses have come to drink. The party set up camp nearby but leave hastily when a tyrannosaurus crashes through the jungle to visit the watering hole.

11th Marpenoth

The characters meet Themba, a friendly cyclops, who is humming to himself as he returns to his home in the Mistcliff Mountains. He tells the party about a ruined city called Orolunga guarded by a wise and generous naga.

The party reach Vorn. This time there is no one there. Certes activates Vorn using the control amulet, and the shield guardian joins the group as the wizard’s bound protector.

13th Marpenoth

The characters head towards Camp Vengeance, accompanied by Frambert and Vorn. As they trudge through the jungle, they are ambushed by a group of angry grungs, unhappy that their “god” Vorn has been stolen. The red grung wilding casts spike growth to pin the characters in place, while the gold leader and green warriors throw daggers and fire arrows at the party.

Tharhul opens fire with his arquebus, Rhamash leaps out of the spike growth and attacks the grungs in melee, and Eysleigh summons Birdie to attack the red grung and break his concentration. Vorn defends Certes in the battle but does not attack. The hapless Frambert turns out to be an inept archer. He falls unconscious but is healed by Eysleigh.

Once the grungs are defeated, Rhamash replenishes his supply of daggers, and the characters continue on their way.
