Game Design News – Farewell to D&D Adventurer & Countdown to Expo

This weekend I received my final package of Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer magazines, containing issues 75 – 80. These issues include the last two adventures I wrote for the magazine: Gateway to the Plaguestone (issue 76) and Scourge of the Plaguestone (issue 79).

Gateway to the Plaguestone is the 7th instalment in the campaign’s final adventure arc in which the characters must find their way inside a giant cocoon of pulsating demonic flesh to confront the BBEG that’s behind the undead attack of Neverwinter. I got to use the disgusting goat-headed bulezau plague demons in this adventure.

Will Doyle and Sarah Madsen did a fantastic job writing the 8th & 9th instalments that take place inside the cocoon, including the final confrontation against archvillain Kreysir the Undying. I had a lot of fun writing Scourge of the Plaguestone, the campaign’s penultimate scenario in which our heroes must destroy the Plaguestone once and for all, and then escape the collapsing demonic flesh cocoon. I used a tweaked version of the chase rules for the exciting and deadly escape back through the encounter areas created by Will in issue 77 and was very happy with how it turned out.

I hope everyone who has bought Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer has enjoyed reading the magazine and playing the adventures. Maybe one day I’ll get a chance to run the complete campaign. In the meantime, if you’ve played any of the adventures I wrote, I’d love to hear they went!

At the end of the month, I’ll be at UK Games Expo, running my new Adventurers League adventure set in Murghôm, Trouble at Kobold Crown.

I ran a playtest for my regular Saturday night group over the Easter weekend and it went really well, with everyone having fun. One of the other people I game with regularly also ran the adventure for his group, testing it out on 1st level pregens. Both playtests have helped shape the version of the adventure which will premiere at Expo.
